I hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July! As promised, here are the foods my family and friends enjoyed on the day of celebration –
From left to right we have fresh strawberries and blueberries, homemade brownies, grilled red peppers, yellow squash, and zucchini, some grilled herb and olive oil chicken…
Fresh watermelon, grilled corn rubbed only with olive oil…
Some barbecued chicken my sauce medley that you guys know, and last but certainly not least.. RIBS! We bought ours ready sauced this time, and I was okay with it. Everything was delicious! A bit of everything for dinner and I was stuffed! Until dessert rolled around…
Some of those homemade brownies, fresh berries, and this awesome ice cream I found! It’s a sweet cream with different berry stripes in it and it tied the whole dessert together perfectly. Red, white, and blue done right!
This was my drink of the evening –
An orange sparkling soda with fresh berries to make it look pretty. Because when it comes to my food, I’m quite vain. Tehe!
So this morning, after my workout my mom and I decided to go the local farmers market about a mile away from our house. Sacramento offers a few different ones every weekend, but we tend to gravitate towards this one on Saturday mornings. This was our bounty –
Glorious, isn’t it? Now let’s look at everything we got!
A giant red onion! I love cooking with these guys (and eating them raw from time to time too, I’ll admit) and this one was huge. You probably cannot tell from the picture, but it’s about the size of a softball. Maybe bigger!
Some yellow squash, zucchini, and a nontraditional varietal of the squash family called Mediterranean squash. I love grilling or searing these veggies in spices and olive oil, sometimes skipping the oil!
Fresh bunches of basil! Now I might have told you guys that I’m growing my own basil, but the heat wave has almost chared it to death 😦 so sad! So when we saw these massive bunches at a great prices we bought some! I’m so excited because I love using basil in everything! And whatever we don’t use we can always dry and preserve for later.
Almonds! This farm sells very nice plain and raw almonds that I like using for baking, cooking, topping salads, and of course, snacking!
Pretty little cherry tomatoes! This stand had a wonderful option of picking and weighing as many tomatoes as you please, so we got lots and lots of these guys! Yummmm.
Green beans! I personally like them fresh, while that isn’t usual, but sauteed or steamed or even baked into a casserole makes them just as tasty.
Corn! We have been eating corn nonstop these days! Obviously it’s a summer staple, but it’s getting ridiculous. In salads, grilled, on tacos, you name it. We’ve done it.
The most beautiful carrots I have even seen! Precious things, huh? I can’t wait to eat them! Unfortunately the woman cut off the gorgeous top bunch of leaves before I could protest so that’s missing from the photo.
Beets! I don’t fancy them as much as my mother, who would kill for a good beet meal, but I will have them when prepared the way I like it. Much to my dismay, I don’t know how to prepare them in such a way. My mom, however, boils them, cools them, and then devours them. To each his own!
Cucumbers! Three huge suckers to complement our salads for these hot days. What more could you want?
Red russet potatoes! I plan to use these tonight for our burger dinner and I’m excited!
And probably my favorite purchase of the entire trip, this Tangelo juice! A Tangelo is a hybrid of a tangerine and a pomelo, and this farm makes special juices, including this one! We had a taste and were immediately sold. One taste and you will be too!
Successful morning, I’d say! I can’t wait to use this stuff all week, and especially tonight! You’ll see the burger feast on here tomorrow so tune in!
